Best Hot Dog Vendor

Kenny Kayhill
On the corner of 12th Street and Locust downtown, just between City Hall and the Jackson County Courthouse, Kenny Kayhill's refrain is familiar: "That'll be $4 for the boss. Whatever you leave the cook is always appreciated." Kayhill, 49, has been cooking hot dogs and Polish sausages under a rainbow umbrella for seven years as a vendor for Little New York Catering. Kayhill's location makes him an ambassador for the city, and he brings smiles to the faces of people whose errands to City Hall and the courthouse might not always be happy ones. "I was gonna put up a sign: ÔHot Dogs $3, Directions $4,'" he says. His favorite part of the job is chatting with the people who stop as they pass by. "They get a couple laughs, BS with me for a while. It makes the workday go smoother." Make sure to ask for Chef Kenny's Original KC Dog: American cheese, spicy smoked sausage and cooked onions, topped with KC Masterpiece. The dog's great, but it's even better when you hear the story that Kenny tells while he makes it.
